WHAT IS CHRONIC PAIN?

Today, chronic pain affects over 100 million individuals across the country. Chronic pain is an ongoing condition, defined  as pain lasting more than six months, where pain signals remain active within the nervous system for months or even years. Chronic pain may originate with an initial trauma, injury or infection. It can also stem from an underlying illness or disease. In some instances, the cause of chronic pain is unknown as individuals may range in severity from being mildly uncomfortable in intensity to a more excruciating, debilitating type of pain that can inhibit functionality in daily activities. Chronic pain not only takes a physical toll on individuals, but emotional as well, which can cause worsened symptoms.
